The Adelaide Town Hall is turning 150 this year and they’ve asked people to share their stories and memories about this amazing and iconic SA venue.

For me, when  I walk into the Adelaide Town Hall, all I see is Timothy James Marks. I hear him, I smell him, I feel him. He’s everywhere. Tim was one of Adelaide’s best conductors, mentors and in my eyes, a musical genius.

He had the uncanny ability to teach, not just skill but foster the love of music in children as young as 5 right up to people in their 80s.

From Beethoven, Elgar and Mozart to Coldplay, Sia and  Michael Jackson, Tim was at home and at his best when he was in front of people singing or playing music.

As a conductor, Tim owned the stage at the Adelaide Town Hall numerous times. In his tails and navy blue cumber-bun he would get in the zone, and his “musical genius” alter-ego would take over. He was a man who could control 500 people with the movement of one finger. All eyes were on him.

Adelaide Chamber Singers, the Australian Youth Choir, the Vienna Boys choir, AUCS, Inunitate and The Graduate Singers are just a few of Tim’s choirs that sang beautiful music on this stage.

Thousands of people are better for knowing Tim. As a conductor and as a friend, he was a brilliant man. Music was in his blood, always humming, tapping, arranging and thinking of new parts and harmonies or instruments to accompany new tunes.

Tim was a beautiful soul that was taken from this Earth before his time. His music lives on in everyone that he taught. His legacy, the stage that he frequented, the viola that he played, his bass voice — it will never be forgotten. I hope other people feel his presence when they walk into the amazing Adelaide Town Hall for years to come.

Happy anniversary Adelaide Town Hall, your walls make so many people happy.
