There is only so much fun play-dough can bring to a kid (and their parents). This winter, put the play-dough down and get out and get amongst it!

Here are 10 things to do with KIDS in the City this winter. For more great ideas, pop over to the Adelaide City Council website.

1. City parks and playgrounds

It might be cold outside, but our city parks and playgrouds are still bursting with fun. You can park-hop along South Terrace visiting Marshmallow Park, Tunnel Park and Princess Elizabeth Playground. One of my son’s faves is The Glover Playground in North Adelaide aka Helicopter Park. For more of our beautiful City parks and playgrounds, head over here.

2. Alpine Winter Village

Well, this is exciting for kids AND adults! The Alpine Winter Village is a super cool, Christmas-inspired winter pop-up ice rink. Set on the stunning River Torrens Riverbank, it’s the perfect setting for family fun during the day and is also a little romantic for the lovers at night.

This winter playground includes an open air ice rink for skating, themed bars, delicious food and loads of entertainment every day!

3. Story City

Now THIS is what adventures are all about! Thanks to the Adelaide City Council you can take part in two exciting adventures around Adelaide CBD, via the Story City App. Each adventure incorporates a little bit of the City’s amazing history – some fact and some fiction. I’m still not sure which is which!

You can pick between becoming the Captain of an alien spaceship searching for missing passengers, or be the sidekick of a nutty, time travelling professor – it’s up to YOU!

Download the Story City app and use your smart phone to explore the City in a whole new light.

4. Magical Music

Music makes everything better! You should check out Umbrella Winter City Sounds for your little ones these school holidays! Whether your kids are into Magic Shows, Space Spectaculars or an Olympic Games Spectacular – there is something for everyone.

5. The Hungry Hippo Board Game Cafe

The Hungry Hippo Board Game Cafe is one of our fave places in the city! It’s super fun for kids AND big kids (as in adults). I’ve been here several times with my adult friends and played adult games, like Babysitters Club, haha! There are hundreds of board games, from old favourites like Monopoly and Risk, to new and exciting games you’ve never heard of. They also have a food and drinks menu, so how could you say no? You’ll find The Hungry Hippo Board Game Cafe on the western end of Hindley Street.

6. Aquatic Adventure

As a kid, I frequented the Adelaide Aquatic Centre like it was my own pool. It’s warm inside and the Adelaide Aquatic Centre is decked out with a slip and slide, splash pads and water play equipment. It’s suitable for all ages, with a diving pool for the slightly larger/dare-devil kids.

7. Wonderful Wildlife

Sleepovers at your friend’s house was always fun, but imagine sleeping over at The Adelaide Zoo! You can! With more than 2,500 curious species on show from reptiles right up to our famous giant pandas and a petting zoo, Adelaide Zoo has it all.

8. Movies

Movies and popcorn will guarantee a smile on most kids faces! It’s a fool-proof way to keep them entertained in Winter. The Palace Nova on Rundle Street and Piccadilly Cinema in beautiful North Adelaide are great spots to see a movie and grab a bite to eat. They are also both surrounded by great coffee shops – bonus!

9. Dino-mite History

Walk with the Dinosaurs, learn about the Egyptians or investigate the largest collection of Aboriginal artefacts in the world at the South Australian Museum – my 4 year old’s mind is boggling at the thought!

You should pay a visit to the Discovery Centre on Level 1 to get all those tricky questions answered. My fave thing to do is watch the bees busily making honey and flying in and out over North Terrace from their hive inside the Museum.

10. Become Mr Maker

The Art Gallery of South Australia has over 38,000 pieces of art that are sure to inspire creative little minds. Do what I do and steal ideas, then play Mr Maker and try to re-create them at home afterwards.
