Right now,  we’re at the hairdressers. Hair covered in layers of foils, and cape on — like a super hero. The lovely hairdresser just said to me, “How lucky are you, you get to do your dream job?” So it got me thinking…

We aren’t lucky.

You see, flash back two years ago and Lauren and I were jobless. We had both just left our radio jobs. We tell people, “I left to have another baby and Lauren wanted to explore the world,” but the truth is, we both went a little crazy and didn’t have a choice.

We were filled with anxiety and stress and at the time, didn’t really know what we were going to do. But we did know that we didn’t want our future jobs to make us feel as bad as we had for the last 10 months.

I’d just had Alfie and was really missing my creative outlet. My mum tried to lighten my spirit and said to me “You and Loz are the perfect team, you should start something together while you’re on maternity leave.” So at brekky one day in January 2015, mouth full of buttery banana bread and Alfie clung to my boob, I turned to Loz and said, let’s DO SOMETHING. And let’s make it f***ing AWESOME.

So, we re-invented ourselves. Not in a hippy-let’s-get-stoned-and-call-ourselves-Jesus kind of way. In a more — let’s work out what we are really good at and run with it, kind of way.

So we created Adelady. It’s everything we are into. We figured, if we are into it, why wouldn’t other Adeladies be also?

We’ve spent the last 2.5 years working countless hours, days, nights and weekends building our community on social media, our website and our TV show. Yes it’s been so much fun, working on our dream and making our own rules, BUT it is lots and lots and lots and LOTS of work.

We’ve just hired our first full-timer, Millie and now have a team of five strong, hard working, funny and warm-hearted Adeladies. This means Lauren and I can run away on holidays while our team work hard for us — lols.

So to the lovely hairdresser who I mentioned at the beginning of this tale — yes, I’m SO lucky. Lucky I get to work with my best friend everyday. Lucky we get to make our own hours so I can work around my husband and kids. But that’s where the luck ends. Everything else is passion and lots of hard work.

I hope this puts a little fire in your belly, knowing that you CAN do and be whatever you want, you just have to DO IT, because very rarely do you strike it lucky.

Love Hayley and Lauren  x

I love the story of how you girls started Adelady. It really shows how despite being on the ‘A’listers page in Adelaide, you really are just like the rest of us out here working hard at our regular jobs.
It’s great the way you both connect with every day people rather than just riding the social scene (if that makes sense!)
This is what sets you apart from the rest. Well done and keep on being you! Keep smiling.

Love your work ladies and yes nothing happens without hard work. Lauren you inspired so many women when you spoke at the EndoMarch this year for us including myself… I’m working hard to leave a job I’m unhappy in and make my blog on parenting with chronic illness a success. Got fire in my belly just have to back myself!
