It’s Mclaren Vales coolest kid on the block. An incredibly eclectic cellar door boasting vintage decor, pinball machines and a DIY style approach to cheese platters.

You’ll find it nestled in the heart of vale, surrounded by orange-kissed vineyards and under the shade of big, beautiful gum trees. Alpha box and Dice is a small boutique winery. However the flavour of their wines is far from small. Their sparkling white is light and palatable and their reds, well, they’re packed full of punchy flavours. With a handful of reds to choose from you’re bound to find one to match your pasta dish, roast dinner or just because.

Walking into the cellar door is like stumbling into your favourite antique store. With the addition of an excellent playlist and staff who are attentive and passionate about what they do. There are velvet chairs to sink into, bar carts used as tables and polaroid cameras displayed on wooden crates. It’s hipster vibe doesn’t end in the main room though. It extends into their additional rooms and flows outside where you will find long tables to snack at and bright blue doors popping with colour in the main garden.

And what was my favourite thing of the whole visit, other than their beautifully crafted wines? A fridge filled with various cheeses, olives, quince and pate. A cheese platter to die for! You’re invited to grab a blue metal plate or cheeseboard and pick at, as much or as little as you like. If you don’t like blue cheese but could eat 50 olives and bags of lavosh? No worries, because it’s tailor-made for you and you choose what’s on your plate.

You can (and should) experience Alpha Box & Dice at 8 Olivers Road, Mclaren Vale. Their wines sell out quickly as they don’t mass produce so if you find one that you love be sure to snap it up or no doubt you’ll suffer buyers regret. Well that’s my excuse anyway.
