VIRGINIA LANGEBERG’S FAVE PLACES IN ADELAIDE

You’ll see her gorgeous face weeknights on Channel Nine News, presenting Adelaide’s weather. Virginia Langeberg moved with her twin brother and beautiful mum, from Sweden to South Australia when she was five and thank God they did — Adelaide is much more attractive now that the Langeberg family is here! From Port Lincoln to Port Pirie, she’s made her way through regional SA to pursue her passion for news and weather. She joined the Channel Nine Adelaide News team in 2008 as a police, court and medical reporter. She has worked her way up the newsroom ladder and now sits comfortably in her dream job. Not only is she a great journalist, but she’s one of the warmest and most genuine media personalities I’ve come across. Her personality is as big as her smile and today we’re so happy to have her as our Inspirational Adelady.

 1. Fave place for a drink 

When it comes to drinking, I’m a two-pot-screamer, so I appreciate a place where I can nurse my (one) glass of red for as long as possible, without looking out of place. I really like the vibe of Adelaide’s laneways in the West End at the moment, Peel Street and Leigh Street are great for my kind of night out! No bookings needed — wander in, if there’s room, settle in, otherwise simply venture next door. It’s perfect!

2. Fave hairdresser

Having the hair that I do (generally untamed, frizzy and care-free), it’s been a long struggle finding a hairdresser in Adelaide who has worked with African curls and knows what to do with them. After many unfortunate haircuts and stylings over the years, I’m happy to share my go-to hairdresser! We’re spoilt here at Channel Nine to have a very talented hair and make-up extraordinaire, Dani Eastick. She’s not just a gorgeous human, but an absolute wizard with the makeup brush and every hair product, straightening or curling instrument known to women-kind. She’s responsible for cutting and styling my hair Monday to Friday and can do straight and curly with ridiculous ease. I wish I had her seven days a week!

Outside of the Channel Nine doors, my go-to salon is Clip Joint on Melbourne Street, with my girl, Oggy. She was the first person in a very long time that I could just sit in the chair and say “Go for it.” This girl KNOWS hair! She’s all about the health of the hair, which is crucial for curly hair (as it’s so prone to drying out and snapping) under the constant hairspray and heat that comes with this job. Side-ways rain, hail storms and heatwaves are no match for these two girls!

3. Fave place to eat 

When I can help it, my life is generally governed by WHERE, WHEN and WHAT I’ll be eating. My nickname at work is Giggle-burger, which is a play on my surname AND the fact I like a bit of a chuckle. If ever I’m a little quiet, more often than not, I’m hangry (hunger + angry). This can happen on long days out on the road, when I’ve forgotten to pack lunch. I’m quickly back to normal after a good hearty burger and fries. That being said, I can generally tell you where you can grab a good feed in just about any direction in Adelaide and beyond. For a quickie, i can’t go past Chinatown Café’s Hainese Chicken Rice (laksa broth is essential with this one). Mix it all up in a big bowl, rice, chicken, spices, asian greens and laksa broth — it’s a sure fire way to silence the Nine newsroom.

You can find another quick meal at Sunshine Deli on Churchill Road, Prospect. I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s the best Vietnamese Bahn Mi out there — Prove me wrong! Another favourite lunch spot, Penny University, Union Street, Adelaide. They’ve got your back for salads. No ordinary salads (you don’t make friends that way) they have ‘hipster’ salads, the kind where you forget how healthy it is and you actually get FULL! I also highly recommend their chicken, moussaka and Portugese tarts — AMAZING!

For dinner, O’Connell Street is home to two of my favourite places. To get a tick in my book, the food needs to be high in flavour and I need to be rolling out of the place into a food coma. So, GinLong always sorts me out. The food is on-point every time. If you’re in the city, Golden Boy is always reliable. The other North Adelaide recommendation would be Three Monkeys, with super cute interiors and the massaman curry is something you’ll crave on a cold winter’s night.

4.  Fave place to shop 

Shopping is my kryptonite, I seem to find endless reasons to have just one more coat! You’re pretty much guaranteed to walk out of BNKR with MUST-HAVES every time! I’m guilty of stalking Bauhaus on Rundle Street. It’s great for gifts, funky jewellery and just about everything you’d want to decorate your house with.

Another store I could easily kill time in is Karibu on Melbourne Street, an awesome mum-daughter duo that have great taste in clothes, jewellery and little home ornaments. Magill Road is also a good place to get lost amongst the candles, homewares and necklaces you may or may not need.

5. Fave place for a weekend getaway

Give me a South Aussie beach and sunshine, and I’m there! I’ve hit up most of our state’s coastline at some point in my life. Port Willunga and Aldinga have always been the go-to spots down South for me and my family. I also love Yorks: Black Point and Stansbury have been the source of some great memories too. I’ve had the privilege of living and working in Port Lincoln, so I’ve always had a soft spot those gorgeous beaches around Coffin Bay.
