Adelady’s very own Kristy is participating in the New York Marathon on November 3rd this year and we’ve seen first-hand the amount of prep she’s put in. Adventure Time Travel designed a training program for this superwoman and she’s been out there pounding the pavement every weekend to work towards her goal.

We caught up with Adventure Time Travel’s founder, Anna Liptak, who’s run over 40 marathons and coached thousands of runners. We asked her for her top tips to get you to that starting-line feeling prepared, confident and ready to enjoy every minute of the experience (well, maybe not EVERY minute, but you get the idea)!

As Anna says, “If you’ve signed up for your first marathon — congratulations! You’ve made a commitment to yourself that will change your life.”

Here are her top six tips to prepare for your first marathon…

1. Choose the right marathon for you

Pick a marathon that excites and motivates you! The bigger the goal, the more likely you are to stay committed to reaching the starting line. Whether it’s a local event or an International marathon, having a goal that inspires you will keep you going through all the ups and downs. I’ve coached runners to both local and overseas marathons, and those who choose a destination marathon often have a higher success rate because the investment (both emotional and financial) drives them forward. Remember, the more you invest, the more motivated you are to overcome any obstacles in your path!

2. Get yourself a coach

A coach who’s ‘been there and done that’ can make all the difference. They’ll provide you with a plan that includes not only running but also essential strength training, and guide you through the entire process. A good coach will help you avoid injury, offer expert advice and keep you on track. Consistency is key and having a coach will help you stay committed to your plan.

3. Get yourself fitted with the right shoes!

Everyone’s feet are different, what’s good for one person is different for another. So, before you even begin your training, make sure you get fitted with a good pair of running shoes from a reputable running store. The right shoes are vital to your success, providing the support and comfort needed to keep you injury-free and feeling good throughout your training. Don’t underestimate the power of a proper fit!

4. Follow the plan consistently

Consistency is king when it comes to marathon training. Stick to your plan wholeheartedly — no excuses! Time can slip away quickly and the more consistent you are, the better your results will be. Make a commitment to yourself to show up and put in the work, no matter what.

5. Surround yourself with a supportive community

Running a marathon is tough, but it’s easier when you have people around you with similar goals. Find a community or a group of like-minded runners to train with. Their support, encouragement and shared experiences will help you stay motivated and make the journey so much more enjoyable.

6. Build your team of health professionals

Your body will need some extra care during marathon training, so it’s essential to have a team of trusted health professionals by your side. A good physio and / or chiropractor and massage therapist will become your best friends and help keep you injury-free and on track. Taking care of your body is just as important as the miles you run.
