Gluten — for many people, it’s a real pain in the gut (literally)!

Bloating, discomfort, nausea, and upset bowels are all common symptoms for people with a gluten intolerance, but it can also cause fatigue, skin rashes, headaches, and even lead to anemia, depression, and anxiety. Imagine having to navigate this every time you wanted to eat out?

That’s why we’re always thrilled when cafes, restaurants, and bakeries step up with amazing gluten-free options for our sensitive-tummied friends. If that’s you or someone you love, we’ve got your back (and your belly)!

Below is a list of spots personally recommended by our trusty Adelady community — the kind of places where you’ll have more food choices than a bowl of hot chips. You can order with confidence, leave feeling satisfied, and best of all, you will NOT be left walking around like a bloated, gassy orangutan for the next two days. #realtalk

Pineapple Picks

First up, here are five gluten-free gems that get our picky-tummy tick of approval:

The Duke of Brunswick Hotel  207 Gilbert Street, Adelaide

The Duke of Brunswick (affectionately known as the DOB) is an absolute trailblazer when it comes to inclusive dining. A few years back, they made their kitchen 100% gluten free — yep, everything on the menu is safe for coeliacs and gluten-sensitive foodies alike. Think pub classics without the stress of cross-contamination. Bonus points: they’ve got LEGO build kits to keep the kids entertained while you tuck in!

The Port Admiral Hotel — 55 Commercial Road, Port Adelaide

Meet the DOB’s sister venue, and another fully gluten-free pub making waves in Port Adelaide. The Port Admiral Hotel dishes up the same all-inclusive menu philosophy — meaning you can order anything without that awkward “is this gluten-free?” chat. It’s got a cracking atmosphere, great service, board games to play over a gluten-free beer, and the kind of community vibe that makes you want to stay all afternoon.

Fish Out of Water

Fish Out Of Water – 117 King William Road, Hyde Park

There’s a reason this place is always buzzing! Fish Out Of Water has perfected the art of gluten-free fish and chips (and then some). Their extensive gluten-free menu goes way beyond the basics. My personal favourite is the Chargrilled Chicken Breast Burger… the mayo is delicious (and they never skimp)! Whether you’re gluten-free or not, this Hyde Park institution is an absolute crowd-pleaser.

Rubys Organic Cafe Stirling

Rubys Organic Cafe

Ruby’s Organic Cafe – 3/29 Mount Barker Road, Stirling

Nestled in the heart of the Adelaide Hills, Ruby’s Organic Café is a 100% gluten-free haven that’s as wholesome as it is delicious. The coffee’s top-notch, the portions are generous, and the staff are always smiling. It’s the perfect pit stop when you’re exploring Stirling.

Foods For You Especially

Food For You Especially — 93 Walkerville Terrace, Walkerville

This beautiful gluten-free bakery and cafe proves that ‘gluten-free’ doesn’t have to mean missing out. Everything’s made fresh by hand using locally sourced ingredients, and you can definitely taste the love that goes into every tasty bite. This is the kind of food everyone will want a bite of — coeliac or not! Just a heads-up, though… once you’ve tasted their goodies, you’ll be back for more.

Carrie x

While all attempts have been made to accurately represent gluten-free eateries, it’s important to confirm with the eatery as to what their methods are to avoid any cross-contamination. We understand that some gluten intolerances/allergies are more sensitive than others, so please always double-check before ordering or eating your meal!
