High river in the Murray River, Lakes and Coorong region is an amazing, natural phenomenon not to be missed. So here’s a list of ways to enjoy the mighty Murray River safely right now.
A sight to behold
A diverse range of towns including Tailem Bend, Meningie, Wellington, Murray Bridge, Mannum, Younghusband, Bow Hill and Swan Reach all have magnificent vantage points and lookouts from which to enjoy the majestic river views. Check out this website for high river flow information.
Sip sip
Wet your whistle with a wine or two in Langhorne Creek. There are so many fabulous wine producers in this area, and their cellar doors are open for business and ready to welcome you with a smile, a Shiraz and some delicious local produce. Adelady tip: you can’t go past Kimbolton Wines and Bremerton Wines for a perfect afternoon of tasting!
Coorong life
This time of year is spectacular in the Coorong, and a visit to the Coorong National Park is a must. The sheer diversity of wildlife and endangered flora and fauna sets this place apart. There are still plenty of walking trails and camping spots to explore in the Coorong during high river, but if you’re not content on the land, explore the world-renowned Coorong National Park on a cruise. From the port of Goolwa to the Murray mouth, the team at Spirit of the Coorong Cruises know their way around – they’ve been operating cruises in this region since 1967! Check in with them for the most up-to-date information about their experiences during the high river period.
Safari me!
One of our fave places to visit year-round is Monarto Safari Park, the largest safari experience outside of Africa! Monarto Safari Park is home to one of Australia’s largest lion prides and giraffe herds. The lemurs are the most delightful little creatures, and there’s even an opportunity to go behind the scenes and explore their habitat. There are so many interactive experiences to enjoy with the whole family, and the best part is it’s right on our doorstep!
Ready, set, go!
Get your hearts racing at The Bend Motorsport Park, home to the world’s second longest permanent circuit. Experience the thrill of hot laps or have a bit of family fun go-karting. When you’ve worn yourself out, rest your head on a comfy pillow at The Rydges Pit Lane Hotel, complete with views of the track, or kick back and enjoy the pool at Big4 The Bend Holiday Park.
Starry starry night
The River Murray Dark Sky Reserve encompasses over 3,200 square kilometres of small townships, conservation parks and farmland along the Murray River. It’s known for its dry climate and cloudless sky, which means it’s home to some of the darkest skies on the planet. So as soon as night falls you simply must look up and enjoy the view! The best way to take in this spectacle is on the Dark Sky Gold Stars Dinner with Juggle House, which includes a guided tour of Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Archaeological Cultural site.
