When we got word that there was a new restaurant dishing up my favourite kind of food in the Adelaide Hills, I grabbed my guy and hot-footed it straight to Honey Bang Bang in Littlehampton for an absolute treat.

The new venture for husband-and-wife duo and previous part-owners of Singapore House — Montie and Hailey Waraich — it’s something a little bit special. It’s been Montie and Hailey’s lifelong dream to open up their very own space and do things just how they want to — channelling years of experience between them and a heck of a lot of passion for exceptional food and service — and by golly, they’ve nailed it!

Head Chef Montie draws on his Indian heritage and French training to plate up the most exquisite range of Southeast Asian dishes. It’s the best tastes from each place in the region and packs an almighty punch of flavour with every bite.

The food

Just as their name suggests, it’s light, super tasty and banging with flavour! It’s all designed to share and although I was eating with someone twice my size, the flavours kept me going bite for bite.

My date and I were ready to fight for the last bite of the Pork Bun and the Corn Corn Cob with mayo, coriander, lime and parmesan was a whole new level of paired-back tastiness. For what it’s worth, it was the lightest, crispiest most heavenly plate of Salt & Pepper Squid with Yuzo mayo I’ve ever eaten (and that’s my go-to for many a meal); the Beef Rendang bounced across my palate; the Duck Salad with Banana Blossom was ridiculously delicious; and I would happily eat the Crying Tiger Salad every day for the rest of my life.

With plenty of Little Bangs, Big Bangs and Bang Bang Sides on offer, we struggled to rate our top dishes because they were all so ace. And in a solid sign of a good meal, we planned our next visit before our knives and forks were even crossed.

A tipple or two

It’s all eyes on the flavour of the food, paired perfectly with a carefully curated range of drinks. Whether you’re a beer, cider, cocktail, mocktail or wine lover, each drink option on the menu has been carefully chosen to complement the food — including Kiwi Passionfruit Sour Brut from Bodriggy and plenty of vinos from SA’s finest wine regions, as well as further afield.

And the jewel in this banging little crown? The most lip-smacking cocktails and mocktails created specifically by Hailey and Montie. It’s attention to this sort of detail that takes this dining experience to the next level and will leave you gob-smacked! And incredible food and service aside, the Rhubarb Margs hold their own so well that we’d happily go back for another round or two.

Our only regret? We ate too much to have room to try the Bang Bang Sweets and we were eyeing off the Raspberry Chocolate Mousse Cake, in particular.

The vibe

The space is welcoming, humble and has an eclectic mix of colours and textures which marry up to create this beautiful place. It’s got a great country kind-of-vibe — down to earth and perfectly placed in the Adelaide Hills and every little detail has been well-thought out, with Hailey saying, “It’s exactly what we want when we go out”. Also, a heads up if you want an intimate event for up to 30 people, they can do private functions so keep that tucked away for a pearler of an idea next time you’re gathering a few together.

We couldn’t fault the service — with the loveliest smiling faces bringing out our dishes, it’s clear that Montie and Hailey are surrounding themselves with a like-minded crew who are all about creating a laid-back, top-quality night out.

Undoubtedly the best meal and night out I’ve had in a long time and I’m already hanging to get back. Do yourself a favour and head up to Honey Bang Bang in Littlehampton for a long lunch, date night or family feed you won’t forget. It was five tasty spuds from us!
