So picture this — we’ve walked into Amadio and within 2 and a half seconds we all have a glass of wine in hand and there’s talk of Mrs Amadio’s meatballs coming to the table. It’s safe to say we feel right at home!
While the KI cellar door only popped up in October 2017, the Amadio name is not new to the island by any means – they’ve been around since the 1970’s. While they’re a household name when it comes to wine, you might not know that they’ve been in the game of developing accomodation, running a nightclub and providing takeaway delicious-ness as well! Boom, what can’t this family do?
The heritage-listed building sits proudly on the corner of Dauncey St and Commercial St, with a big empty block of land right next to it (PS we hear big things are planned for that space, so stay tuned). This new destination is eager to please, keeping the doors open and the drinks flowing for as long as they have customers there to try their Kangaroo Island and Adelaide Hills ranges.
But don’t be fooled, it’s not ALL about the wine. The tapas style menu is chocka-block full of delicious snacks, all of which have been created by Mumma Amadio (Jenny). From the peasant platter, to the halloumi salad and the deliciously simple pizzas, you won’t be disappointed. We recommend ordering a few plates to pop in the middle of the table and share.
The new space gives you plenty of seating options, including inside dining and wine tasting – or if something casual is more your style then grab a wine barrel outside on the street and watch as the world goes by.
One thing that you can’t help but notice is the absolute passion that buzzes around the cellar door – not just a passion for the Amadio wines but a passion for Kangaroo Island in general. It’s absolutely contagious and we left with a brand new “To Do” list to try out.
