The Murray River, Lakes and Coorong region is bursting at the seams with natural beauty.

A rough start to 2020 gifted us all the opportunity to put the focus back on our incredible state. Instead of mourning where we can’t go, let’s look at where we can go — because it’s bloody awesome!

Friendly neighbour to the Limestone Coast, Riverland, Barossa, Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula, this region can well and truly hold its own. From natural beauties to man-made wonderlands, you won’t squeeze it all in on one day, so ask your boss nicely for a few days off.

Stargazing

The best spot to stargaze is in the River Murray Dark Sky Reserve, found across Swan Reach, Black Hill and Walker Flat. Just like our land is worth protecting, so is our night sky, and these protected spaces battle the light pollution to truly let the stars shine.

Brekky with a view

Big fans of brekky, it’s no wonder we sniffed out this beauty. The Bowhill General Store offers more than just your daily milk and eggs. Sit out on the deck overlooking the Murray and feast on breakfast or lunch — we can give the coffee and salt and pepper squid an A-Plus.

Get amongst nature

Don’t let the name fool you — Big Bend By Night is ready to go, day and night. Book in advance to guarantee your spot on one of the unusual and charming tours. Safari through the property surrounded by the Big Bend cliffs where you’ll search for native animals; check out the cacti field; and suss the shearing shed filled with artefacts. Stick around after your tour is over and explore on your own — you can even bring along a picnic and some bevvies.

Jump on safari

Just an hour away from the CBD is the biggest safari park outside of Africa. Monarto Safari Park offers unique experiences like Lions 360, Giraffe Safari, and the Rhino Express. With big plans to build a luxury safari accommodation site already underway, this park is world-class.

Where to stay

Browse through the long list of holiday homes on offer through River Shack Rentals. These aren’t your ordinary shacks… we’re talking fully furnished two-storey homes. Individually owned, they vary in style so you can pick from more than 70 houses. For a super speccy stay, look out for the brand new Hex — an accommodation pod floating on the river which is perfect for a couple’s getaway.
