Walking into the screening of UNLEASH: The Documentary, we had absolutely no idea what we were in for. An hour and a half later, we walked out completely wowed by the strength of the women featured, and with a new interest in the world of burlesque — and man, does it have a lot to offer!

Created by South Australian production company All Sourced Up, this film follows twelve everyday women across nine weeks as they overcome adversity through burlesque dance. But best of all, it shines a light on the fact that ANYONE can dance — no matter their age, size or pressures put on them by society.

“Each woman in this film demonstrates strength through embracing what makes them feel sexy,” says Creative Director Melony Cherrett. “No matter their age, culture, background or circumstance – watching each woman’s individual journey of discovery through dance is truly inspiring and quite often tear-jerking”.

One of the incredible stories that you get a sneak-peek into is Cassie Hipkiss, who found huge support from the dance community through her battle with a brain tumour. “I’ve embraced burlesque as a positive influence on my mental health, and I know there are so many others that have done the same. This film is important in demonstrating the effect that dance and community have in being able to change people’s lives,” says Cassie.

And Cassie’s story is just the tip of the iceberg, with each of the women privately dealing with their own insecurities and sensitive topics — only to come out firing with the grand finale: a beautifully bold on-stage performance that will make you feel all the feels.

We rolled through each and every emotion while watching this inspiring film, and while Burlesque might not have been on the table for us before, it most certainly is now.

UNLEASH: The Documentary is only showing for one more weekend at Wallis Cinemas, so make sure to snap up some tickets now (and be prepared to dust off your dancing shoes)!
