HOW IMPERFECT WAS YOUR XMAS?

Think of every Xmas you’ve had in your lifetime. How many can you remember? I can only really remember a handful in detail. I remember these ones because they weren’t perfect. They were laugh out loud bad! Imperfections are what makes the world go around… and sometimes upside down.

They are the best kind of Xmas. They’re the ones we’ll think of when we’re ninety-five, in an old folks’ home and we have nothing else to think about but the past… and maybe how good the custard tasted at lunch.

Yesterday was certainly imperfect for me. We were invited to the most gorgeous Xmas breakfast, with one-on-one time with Father Xmas! That’s every kids dream, right?

The whole way there, my four-year-old was singing carol after carol and talking about all the things he’s going to chat to Father Xmas about. He couldn’t wait to sit on his lap! It was beautiful. His excited little face made me want to squeeze him with love.

He jumped out of the car and couldn’t get inside Westfield fast enough. He skipped along the path, singing “Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer”, with glee.

Then he stopped.

Frozen, like Elsa.

All the colour went from his face.

He saw Father Xmas and burst into tears! “Help, help, help’, he screamed, terrified that this jolly red fellow would even look his way. He was sweating and crying like he’d just seen Stephen King’s “It” for the first time. Like the great mum that I am — I almost wet myself laughing at the situation!

It took the gorgeous girls from Westfield nearly an hour to coax him into going within twenty-five metres of Father Xmas.

So this was our family photo of four… minus Austin, who was shaking behind a pot plant. Minus Alfie, who was losing his shit at the sight of Father Xmas. And minus Jimmy, who was comforting Alfie. So this Xmas was just me!
