There’s a vintage-loving tribe out there who love the unexpected. Searching shelves and racks for one of a kind treasures. The rush of adrenalin when the shop owner says, “Sorry there’s only one” — Out comes the card!

A couple of weeks ago two girlfriends from school and I went op shopping on a Friday arvo – we had a ball. It reminded me of the days we used to venture into Rundle Mall to wander around Sportsgirl for HOURS!

Here are a few of my favourite vintage shops to hunt for treasure. These made my list because they ALWAYS have something I can’t resist and they provide the best service, with a smile.

1. Salvos Store – Melrose Park

:: 1069 South Road, Melrose Park

I rushed to this huge Salvos store to buy my Adelady launch outfit. All $35 worth, with a retail value of over $350. I love the Salvos. You always receive the best service, the stores are kept immaculate and stock is turned over every day. I was even short of money recently and they said “Just pay us the difference when you’re next in”, now that’s a first!

 2. Vintage Carousel

:: 26 Hawker Street, Bowden

VC is an institution. If you haven’t been to Rach’s pocket-sized treasure chest then you must. Rach (the owner) is also a very clever stylist and loves to pass on her brilliant ideas about how to style homes and workplaces to her customers.  My favourite part; she finds the best on-trend treasures! If you want something in particular, Rach can usually find it for you.

3. Cross Road Collectibles

:: 441 Cross Road, Edwardstown

Cross Road Collectibles is a haven for the unexpected. You won’t find styled-up beauty though, you have to rummage or just ask Ronnie and he will rummage for you. CRC has been around for years and you can always find a bargain and something completely random. I saw a taxidermist emu in there the other day, it scared the life out of me. No it didn’t come home with me. Make sure you take your time and don’t wear your best attire, dust comes free. Ha.

 4. Hahndorf Trading Co.

:: Unit 4 (Rear), 44 Main Street, Hahndorf

“Purveyors of Funkery” – how cool is this tag line. There’s a new kid on the block in gorgeous Hahndorf. Just head up the driveway past the Hahndorf Leathersmith (another gem) and you will find a big man with a smile on his dial. Greg has the funkiest finds in the hills. He loves a chat too, so hang around for some funny stories while you lust after the must-have artworks, vintage wares and other funky stuff. Oh and check out his car too!

5. The Warehouse at Woodside

:: 51a Onkaparinga Valley Road (Main Street), Woodside

Sarah and Craig run this hills goldmine and again it’s not a ten-minute visit. I have been known to stay for over two hours, talk too much and rack up the purchases — but hey, I had fun! Craig has a knack of finding those rustic old gems we think are long gone. I recently took friends there to source some quirky pieces for their home. Craig likes to tease his clients with beautiful wares on his Instagram page. “Sorry, not for sale – that’s in my secret shed.”

What better time than Winter to revamp the wardrobe or the spare room, have fun and a good old road-tripping laugh. Enjoy!
