AMELIA MULCAHY; ADELADY

With a beaming smile and warm, cheerful personality, Channel 7 News‘ weather presenter is a true South Aussie gem. Amelia Mulcahy took the reigns at the end of 2013 and we now see her and her infectious smile each weeknight at 6pm. She’s definitely not afraid of getting out in the elements; you’ll often see her high up on a show ride or battling a hail storm, just to keep give us the forecast. I knew she was a good egg as soon as I saw her delicious best friend — Barkley, the British Bulldog. He’s SO CUTE! Amelia’s also the perfect ambassador for this year’s Fashion at the Races and will be gracing us with her presence at a number of events on the South Australian racing calendar.

Today, we’re soooo pleased to have her as our Inspirational Adelady. These are some of her fave places in Adelaide…

1. Fave place to have a drink

I’m thanking my lucky stars that I recently did a story on new bars in Adelaide for SALife TV, so I feel well-versed in the area. Approaching me for the story went a little like this: SALife Producer, Tracy Ayris said, ‘Would you like to go out and try cocktails at new bars for us?’
Me, ‘If I have to’. (Runs around the corner, jumps up and down.)

After that, I discovered La Buvette is possibly the most authentic Parisian experience aside from going to France. Inside, it’s easy to feel like you’re in the middle of Paris, when in actual fact, you’re just on Gresham Street in the city. Loved it!

I also revisited my favourite place on Hutt Street – Bar Torino. It’s run by the son and daughter of the family who have Chianti (also amazing and conveniently, next door).

If I’m in the suburbs, I’ll head to The Grace Establishment – it’s always a favourite among my friends, and the Sangria and sliders are to die for.

2. Fave hairdresser

My hairdresser is now a close friend. We first met when I told a friend at uni that she looked like a mermaid with her beautiful hair and she put me onto Marcela who worked in the city at the time. Not long after, Marcela left to have her first child and was nowhere to be found! I managed to track her down — there was no way I was going to let her disappear! She now has her own salon at Mawson Lakes, which isn’t close to me, but as I say to everyone, I’d travel to the ends of the earth for this lady!!

3. Fave dessert bar

I LOVE dessert, it’s one of my favourite meals! I’d have to say Elephant Walk on O’Connell Street does a fantastic banana split and I can’t go past the crepes at the Royal Copenhagen at Brighton.

4. Fave place to eat

When I’m stuck, I always go to Parisis or La Trattoria. The Parisis family totally has pasta and pizza down pat (two of the key food groups). Enzo’s, next door to Channel 7, is also a winner when it comes to Italian.

I love trying new places too. Given that it’s winter, I’m loving authentic, hearty meals. So nothing beats a good pub meal! Sean’s Kitchen is always good and so is 2KW. Also, I recently tried Hispanic Mechanic — love their nachos!

I’m not a fan of places with set times; nothing’s more awkward than being told someone’s waiting for your table, when you haven’t finished your glass of sparkling! Maybe I’m just a slow eater?

5. Fave place to shop

Niki Belle at Burnside and the Little Boutique at Grange are my favourite places to shop – their owners curate their stock so well. I always try them if I’m after a weekend outfit. I love local label, Namoi. Owner/designer, Kalila, does some fabulous laid-back pieces that I ALWAYS get compliments on (and no one has them)! And speaking of local designers, I’ll always hit up BNKR online for work or play.

6. Fave place for a weekend getaway

THE RIVER! Nothing’s better than sitting around a bonfire at night, with the water just to the side of you. I’ve also just got a new wakeboard, so I’m trying to get there as much as I can. I also love Port Lincoln and anywhere at Yorkes. Being by the water is my happy place.
