For some, it’s chocolate. My Achilles heel is cheese — hard cheese, soft cheese, blue cheese, white mould cheese, cheddar cheese, goats cheese, flavoured cheese, melted cheese… just gimme all the cheese, please!
Luckily one of my favourite haunts, Udder Delights Cheese Cellar, is just a hop, skip and a jump away from my house, and the options for INCREDIBLE local cheese in all forms are right there.
A quick chat with Sheree Sullivan, owner of Udder Delights, confirmed that cheese addiction is actually a thing (our endorphins go cray cray) and I’m 100 percent sure I’m wrapped around its delicious little finger (which is probably made of a Triple Brie).

So for anyone else needing your next hit, here’s everything you need to know about my fave SA Cheesemakers…
Cellar Doors aren’t just for wineries
A trip to Hahndorf to Udder Delights Cheese Cellar is like visiting the holy grail of tasty treats. It’s no mistake this business has been booming for over 21 years now and owners, Sheree and Saul Sullivan are just as passionate as they were the day they opened the doors.
This unique shop right at the entrance to the main street is wall to wall with different types of cheese, plus a delightful cafe using the finest ingredients in all of their dishes. Just look for the bright yellow cow on the main street and you’ll know you’ve found it!
Get tasting
You don’t have to speak fluent Cheese to shop here. In fact, it’s the best place to learn and discover new types! With free tastings daily between 10am and 4pm, Sheree and Saul have a dedicated cheese aficionado on site to tell you the story behind what you’re tasting and make recommendations for your cheese adventure, which is often based on a type of cheese or the region it comes from.

Pick me, pick me!
It can be hard to know where to start and although the team is on hand to guide you, these would have to be three cheeses you simply HAVE to try next time you visit.
- Udder Delights Brie range – whichever ripe Brie is chosen for you from the range on the day, you’re guaranteed it’ll be the one in the best condition and ready to eat. Double Cream, or Triple Cream Brie, Ash Brie… they’re all a winner on a grazing plate.
- Udder Delights Blue range – the team will pick the one that’s best suited to try, but their Mawson Blue (which has a striking yellow colour) will have you doing a little happy dance.
- Udder’s Choice – let go and allow the experts pick the cheese of the day from a Cheesemaker they admire. It may be an Australia blue, a goats cheese from Holland… whatever the case, your cheese tasting adventure will be guided with gusto.

Platter up
If I could eat one style of food for the rest of my life, it’d hands down be a platter — and boy, oh boy, do Udder Delights know how to platter!
Their Ploughmans Board is an English-style platter, filled with smoked leg ham, salami, relish, pickled onions, Dijon mustard, and of course, a mature cheddar and an Adelaide Hills Brie.
I’m just as partial to their Grazing Board which is packed with delightful pates and terrines like you’ve never seen, as well as smoked kransky, salami, pickles, olives and goats curd.
When the weather is cooler, their take on a Swiss Classic, the cheese fondue, simply walks out the door, but my personal favourite and something that’s popular with peeps of all ages, is their Truffled Cheddar Toastie. It’s a heavenly combo of rustic bread, matured cheddar, truffle parmesan and truffle salt with mini balsamic onions on the side and it’s oh-so-delicious!
More than just cheese
It’s not all savoury at Udder Delights… their Hahndorf cafe is always pumping with people coming from everywhere to try their coffee, cakes and wine to boot.
I was known to inhale their carrot cake with cream cheese frosting when I was pregnant and I can’t go past without buying one of their individual little cheesecakes for a sweet treat when I’m in the area.
They also make insane short cut pastries and a whole bunch of items they can’t take off the menu as they’re high in demand from regulars.
Go uber cheesy for a special occasion

The future looks bright for my fellow cheese lovers, with news that the Udder Delights crew is planning some truly exciting developments. Sheree and Saul have put their heads together with the owner of the former Grumpy’s site in Hahndorf and, whilst still in the early stages, there are some expansive cheesy adventures on the horizon. We’ll udderly keep you posted!
Soooo, now that you’ve listened to me rabbiting on for several paragraphs, it’s a brie-lliant idea for you to head straight to Udder Delights Cheese Cellar in Hahndorf — it really doesn’t get cheddar than a grate afternoon of tasty bliss with these legends of cheese.
