Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and before you know it you’ll be scrambling to find Mum a last minute gift. What did you get her last year? Does she even NEED a new pair of slippers? Why can’t I ever think of anything original?!

We’re here to help! We want our Mums to feel as valued and as special as they are, (and I’m afraid a limp bunch of carnations is not going to cut it)! This year, how about we think outside the square a little bit. Why not buy Mum an experience? Whether it’s tickets for an upcoming concert (you know she’s always had a little crush on Bublé), or a cooking class to learn how to perfect her favourite cuisine in her own kitchen. If you’re lucky, she might even practise her new found cooking skills on you!

Being a Mum myself, I’ve really enjoyed doing the research on this one… it’s given me some ideas of my own (hint hint to my fam). Below you will find my favourite gift options for Mum this Mother’s Day, and there’s not a carnation or pair of slippers in sight!

EXPERIENCES & WORKSHOPS

This is one of my favourite gift ideas, as often we have a niggling little interest in a particular hobby, but don’t do anything about it. However… if we are GIFTED this experience, it forces us to bite the bullet and actually do something nice for ourselves. Whether Mum is an avid food lover, or has always wanted to try pottery, there is an experience or workshop out there to suit. Who knows — she may end up turning her living room into an art workshop after this (I’m looking at you, Hayley Pearson!)

What’s even better is that you can sign yourself up as well, and join mum for some quality time together. Imagine how much fun it would be to do a Mystery Picnic or an Escape Room together? Win-win!

Here are my top pics for experiences and workshops in Adelaide:

Sticky Rice Cooking School – cooking class

Amazing Co. – mystery picnic

Red Rosie Scent Design Studio – perfume or candle making

Urth Clay Studio – pottery workshop

Vintage Van Gough – paint and sip workshop

The Makery Co – paint and sip creative workshops

Adventure Rooms – escape room

Lions 360 – lion feeding at Monarto

CONCERTS

Does Mum love her music? Why not surprise her with tickets to an upcoming concert. She’ll be chuffed to receive such a thoughtful gift and also have something to look forward to!

There are many artists performing in Adelaide this year so you’re bound to find something that gets her foot tapping (or head banging if she’s hardcore like that).

Here are my top pics:

COMEDY SHOWS

They say laughter is the best medicine and I wholeheartedly agree! Life can be all too serious sometimes and it feels great to have a good belly laugh. I think a comedy show is such a great gift idea. Why not take mum for dinner (and a couple of chardy’s) first and have the ultimate girls night out. You’ll be buzzing with endorphins all the way home… and perhaps an overworked pelvic floor!

Hans Disco Spektakulär – Dunstan Playhouse

CIRCUS / MUSICAL / DANCE

Is Mum more of a theatre kind of gal? There’s something pretty special about going to see a show, and there are plenty of options to tickle her fancy.

Here’s a few that got my attention:

Mary Poppins – Adelaide Festival Centre

The Australian Ballet: Swan Lake – Adelaide Festival Centre

PAMPER

Look, if all else fails — you simply CANNOT go wrong with some pampering! Why not give mum a gift voucher for Jab Acupuncture and allow her to experience the holistic benefits of Chinese Medicine on her physical and emotional health. Or gift her with a massage or facial (as you know she usually wouldn’t treat herself).

Here are our favourite SA owned pampering options:

Jab Acupuncture – Clarence Park

The Nail Bar – Norwood, Adelaide CBD, Edwardstown, Murray Bridge, Port Pirie

Temple Day Spa – Unley

Foraj – Australian made, cruelty free skincare products

Elixir Skin Fitness – Beulah Park

GIFTS

If you’d prefer to buy Mum a tangible gift — why not support a local SA business.

Here are a few ideas that we love, and we’re sure you will too:

Winestains

These guys use recycled wine barrels to make the most unique platters and grazing boards. They also sell the most ingenious picnic products — like these ‘stakes’ (pictured) that peg into the grass and hold your wine glasses. I mean — where has this been all my life?!

Picnic Mantra

Speaking of picnics — for those of you who are drawn to the boho aesthetic, I have the ultimate shop for you. When you lay down on these stunning picnic rugs and cushions, they will almost have you fooled that you are a Byron Bay influencer basking in the sun in your crisp white linen, and not an arrowroot-stained mother of 3 dealing with squabbling siblings, popcorn explosions and squashed watermelon. Trust me — you’ll look the goods, even if you don’t feel it!

Etikette Candles

You really cannot go wrong with a good quality candle. And these candles are made ethically and lovingly in our very own Adelaide Hills! Their purpose is to share stories of the Australian landscape through the power of scent and memories. They also sell their trademark scents in diffuser form, and have many gift set options available.

Sandra Gale Studio

Sandra Gale’s mission is to help people brighten up their world with fun and colourful art… and I can tell you now that she’s nailing it! You only have to open her website to see what I mean. Surprise mum with something original from the range – a print, a candle, a t-shirt or some home decor. She will feel happy every time she looks at it.
