Tanning…you never want to be the Oompa Loompa in the room!

They say that black is flattering, but in my experience, a spray tan is even better at making a woman feel slim and fresh.

That being said, there are many do’s and don’ts that will help you to avoid streaks, patchiness and overall looking like a sweet potato following your spray tan.

PRE TAN

:: In the 2-3 days leading up to your tan make sure that you are buffing away dry skin before tan application with a gentle natural exfoliator, this will make the tan last longer by revealing new skin.

:: Wax no less than 24 hours before treatment, 48 hours is ideal as it allows pores to close.

:: Shave at least 24 hours before the treatment and apply a rich moisturiser to replenish dry skin.

:: Moisturise generously the day before, ideally overnight. This will help to prevent dryness and provide the perfect tanning base.

:: Rinse off any products, perfume, oils, moisturisers, and make up before attending your spray tan appointment.

:: Dark, loose cotton and jersey fabrics and dark underwear without tight waistbands are ideal to wear before and after your spray tan, as they are less likely to rub and remove colour. Loose fitting clothes are also always best.

:: Another good one that a lot of my new clients don’t know is that if you have never had a spray tan before it pays to do a patch test and just a quick small spray of the tan to ensure that it won’t irritate your skin.

POST TAN

:: Basically, the less you sweat and shower the better, however this isn’t always a possibility so by patting yourself down gently instead of using a rubbing motion to get dry, you will avoid patchiness and uneven streaking in your tan.

:: Do not shave for the first 12 hours after spray tanning; also avoid deodorants and moisturisers during developing time.

:: Wearing thongs or no shoes for the first five hours after your tan is also highly recommended so that the tan doesn’t develop unevenly on your feet.

TAN MAINTENANCE

:: Avoid long hot baths/showers, as hot temperatures can open your pores and will release tan more quickly.

:: Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs and seawater.

:: Moisturise twice a day and pat your skin dry. Try to use a fresh razor every time you shave during your tan.

:: Keep these tips close by and you will never be a patchy Oompa Loompa ever again, all it takes is simple skin care tips to ensure that your tan is stunning for as long as possible.
