Poor old winter, it gets a tough wrap… until you focus on a hot coffee or a glass of red by an open fire!
Sure, it’s not all sunshine and beaches in the cooler months, but there’s no need to hibernate and miss out on interacting with humanity, especially when SA’s filled with cosy pubs for a tipple and a bite to eat!
We’ve shovelled these crackers into a neat little bundle to warm your soul. Enjoy!
THE DUCK INN, COROMANDEL VALLEY
The Adelaide Hills know how to do winter, so it’s no surprise that The Duck’s open fireplaces grab our attention when it’s howling outside. This unpretentious pub welcomes you without any fuss and feels like you’ve ducked into a mate’s for a catch-up — made better when you can kick back on the comfy chesterfields and no one has to cook or clean up! You’ll hug yourself when you tuck into their high-quality, seasonal dishes based on the best of local produce, all made by an ace team of chefs.

VICTORIA HOTEL, STRATHALBYN
Rug up and make a day of it by heading 40 minutes from the Adelaide CBD to the crackling fires at the Vic Hotel in Strathalbyn. You’re welcomed into the historic bluestone building with the kind of country hospitality that comes with being in a quaint town like Strath. Heads up to schedule it around a meal so you don’t miss out on feasting in the unique split-level restaurant that’s got a lush garden, and views of the water feature and historic stone barn. And although you can choose from plenty of drinks, their list of local reds makes us oh-so proud to be South Australian!

THE COLONIST, NORWOOD
There’s a solid reason The Colonist’s been going strong since 1851! She’s a beauty all year-round, but the toasty flames in the Fireplace Room and the outdoor heaters and blinds make it ideal for an easy drink or feed in winter. The atmosphere in this intricate venue makes it super welcoming and cosy, with its high ceilings, ornate copper roofing and original scenic wallpaper. Add in a menu that features seasonal ingredients from some of SA’s finest suppliers, tapas, pub classics and restaurant-quality meals (including options for gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian needs), and you’re a-ok in the depths of the cold here.
